Gabriel Harvey @ nii agency
What’s your background?
I am Jewish (Ashkenazi) and come from Polish and Russian descent. I value my heritage so much because I realise how important it is that I am here today. Throughout history, the persecution, alienation and eradication of the Jewish people has meant that a lot of our culture, specifically in Europe, has been erased. Anti-semitism is a common factor and is engrained in western culture and is often unspoken about. It is not okay. I feel most passionate about my religion because I find there is so much beauty in its teachings. Of course, there are many things I am critical of within Judaism, yet as a whole it makes me want to be a better, kinder and more compassionate person
How have you found modelling in an industry dominated by tall male models, being a shorter model yourself?
In truth, it can be difficult at times. Although the industry is shifting, there is still quite a close-minded perception of what a male model should look like. It was really important for me to remind myself that just because I’m different does not mean that I am less than. Of course, there have been some painful experiences, yet they have all given me a tougher skin. I have learnt to love my height and value it as something unique as opposed to substandard. It is okay not to fit the norm. Besides, how boring would it be if we all looked the same!
Who or what inspires you creatively?
The kindness of strangers really inspires me. It doesn’t have to cost anything yet can have such a huge impact on someone’s day. That and Barbra Streisand I.e the greatest voice of our time!
If you could fix one global issue, what would it be and why?
Global Warming. It is real people. Why would you want to hurt a planet as beautiful as ours? It makes no sense to me.
Where is home?
The British Library :)
